Art

Cupcakes
Have the children decorate cupcake shapes made from construction paper. You can decorate them with glitter, paint, markers, crayons or holes from a hole punch.

My Birthday Cake
Have the children design their own birthday cake. Use a paper plate for the cake shape. Have the children decorate with glitter, paint, markers, crayons, holes from a hole punch, or other items.

Centers - math, science, games

Doughnut Puzzles
Cut doughnut shapes from different colored construction paper. Cut each shape into halves. Mark one side with a capital letter and the other with the lower case letter. Have the children match up the doughnut halves.

Leveling Off
Leveling off dry ingredients is an important part of baking. Supply the children with a large container with flour in it and measuring spoons and a butter knife. Show the children how to level off the dry ingredients. Be sure to stress that the ingredients should be leveled off into the bowl to be used again.

Goop
Mix 2 cups water and 6 cups of cornflour/cornstarch to make goop.

Fishing Game
Tie 3 feet of string to a wooden spoon. Attach a magnet to the end of the string. Cut and laminate many different colored, and sized bakery shapes (cookies, doughnuts, cupcakes) from construction paper (not too big though). Attach a paper clip to each shape. Spread the shapes shapes on the floor and let your child try to catch a shape. Have them try to catch the red shape.. or the biggest shape. For a twist, label the shapes with letters or numbers. Ask the children to catch a specific shape, or ask them which shape they caught.

Group Time

Shape Hop
Place shapes (cupcakes, cookies, doughnuts) on the floor. Have the children hop from one shape to the next.

Shape Seat Markers
Cut out and laminate big shapes (cupcakes, cookies, doughnuts) to be used as seat markers for the children to sit on during story and circle time.

What time is it Mr. Baker?
This is a fun game to play outside. You can change the name to suit any theme. The children all line up against a wall or fence. And one child, Mr. Baker or the teacher faces away from the children, a good distance away from the children. The children yell, what time is it "Mr. Baker", Mr. Baker answers 1 o'clock, and the children all take one step toward Mr. Baker. The children yell again, what time is it "Mr. Baker", Mr. Baker answers (fill in the blank) o'clock, and the children all take same number of step toward Mr. Baker. This continues until all the children are very close to Mr. Baker, then Mr. Baker will answer it's midnight, and chases the children back to the fence or wall that they started at. The first person Mr. Baker touches will be the new Mr. Baker.

Dramatic Play

Play Dough Fun
Have the children pretend to be a baker using play dough. Provide the children with a rolling pin to roll out the dough then, they can use cookie cutter to make different shapes. Place the shapes on a sheet and pretend to bake them. Then they can pretend to decorate them and sell them in at the store. Alternately, they can fill mini cake pans or muffin tins with play dough and pretend to bake, decorate and sell the baked goods. You could even put some play dough in a plastic ziplock bag and cut the corner. Have the children squeeze the bag to decorate the cookies or the cake.

Make your own pretzels.
Make rolls or biscuits

Cookies
Use your favorite sugar cookie recipe to make the dough. Use cookie cutters, bake. When cool decorate as desired.

Bake cookies. The easiest way to do this is to buy the already made cookie mix and have the children help place the dough onto the sheet. But for older children, have them start from scratch with a simple recipe.

Bake cupcakes. Buy a cake mix and have the children help mix the ingredients as instructed and have older children pour the cupcake mix into the containers. When cool decorate as desired.

Bake Muffins. Buy a mix and have the children help mix the ingredients as instructed and have older children pour the mix into the containers.
